Perinatal Primary Care with Dr Melanie Mapleson
Championing tiny humans (and their grown-ups).
Becoming a parent is one of life's biggest transitions. Whether you're planning a pregnancy, expecting your first baby, navigating the early newborn weeks, or working through later feeding challenges, Dr Mel Mapleson offers calm, evidence-based support every step of the way.
Dr Mel is a Specialist General Practitioner (BAppSc, MBBS, FRACGP, DCH), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC/Possums) Accredited Practitioner with niche expertise in prenatal care, breastfeeding and lactation medicine, newborn health, and the care of parents during the perinatal period.
Her approach is slow, thoughtful medicine, where every family is heard, respected, and supported. Her signature appointment type, for comprehensive breastfeeding and baby care, is 90 minutes long.
Dr Mel provides care throughout the perinatal journey, including:
- Preconception and pregnancy planning
- Antenatal GP Shared Care in pregnancy
- Antenatal breastfeeding preparation
- Breastfeeding/lactation medicine and other infant feeding support
- Relactation and lactation induction
- Newborn health checks
- Infant growth concerns
- Perinatal mental health
Dr Mel believes that great medicine starts with listening and kindness. Her consultations are designed to be unhurried, practical and evidence-based, with plenty of time for lists and questions. You'll find a calm, relaxed consulting room, where there is no judgement, no pressure, and no expectation that you should already know how to navigate parenthood. She has a particular passion for helping parents make sense of the overwhelming amount of advice available online and in the community. Together, she can help you build confidence in your own instincts, and create a plan that works for your unique family.
Dr Mel supports responsive, needs-supportive parenting and enjoys helping families understand normal infant behaviour, feeding and development. Her goal isn't simply to solve today's problem, it's to help you leave feeling informed, empowered and confident.
Dr Mel's perinatal service complements, rather than replaces, your ongoing relationship with your regular GP. She does not provide long-term regular GP care.
Whether you're preparing to welcome your baby or navigating the brilliant chaos that follows, Mel would be delighted to support you and your family. You can find more information about Mel and her care at www.perinatalprimarycare.com and @drmelmapleson (Instagram).
